The North Shore refers to the area directly across the Burrard Inlet from Vancouver itself. The suburban mountainside communities of North Vancouver and West Vancouver make up this affluent neighborhood. This part of Greater Vancouver is linked to Vancouver itself by two bridges, the Lions Gate and the Iron Workers Memorial also known as the first and second narrows bridges.
Being built at the base of several local mountains, the North Shore offers its residents a unique micro-climate within the Greater Vancouver area. As storm fronts come off the Pacific Ocean they hit the mountains of the North Shore and as such this area can receive up to 40% more rain than more southern parts of the region over a typical year. Because of this rain, most of the North Shore is covered in lush vegetation.
North Shore residents are a 15 minute drive from Vancouver's three local ski mountains, Cypress, Grouse and Seymour. The North Shore is also connected to Nanaimo and the Gulf Island through the Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal. Highway 1 runs through the middle of the area and continues Northbound to Squamish and Whistler. A ferry system known as the Seabus connects the district with rapid transit.

While growth continues at a rapid pace throughout Metro Vancouver, growth in the North Shore communities is occurring at a much slower rate. A lack of suitable land left to develop, combined with a generally negative attitude towards development by area residents has contributed to this slower growth. Much of the new growth that is occurring is in the form of high-rise towers in the city of North Vancouver.
