Surrey is the second biggest city in Greater Vancouver and one of the fastest growing cities in Canada. Located on the south shore of the Fraser River, it occupies the second largest land mass in the region behind the City of Langley. Surrey started out as a major agricultural producer, at one time it was the biggest producer of lettuce in British Columbia.Over 400,000 people and growing call Surrey home. |

Surrey's central location between both the Greater Vancouver district and the Fraser Valley has meant that most major transport links run through it. These links as well as the fact that Surrey lies on the US border have significantly effected growth. Many of the regions major road and rail links pass along side or through the City of Surrey. Major highways 1, 91, and 99 connect it with Metro Vancouver. |

While most of Surrey’s minor roads follow the path of suburban development, its major roads are arranged mostly in a grid structure. This grid makes Surrey somewhat different than most major suburbs found in other cities. While having direct access to 3 major freeways, the city is still spared the eye sore as none of these pass directly through the city and are located on the outskirts. |

What were once large tracks of farm land has now become a massive suburban community with people from all over the world moving in. Strong communities of Indo and Asian Canadians give the city a much more international flare than most bedroom communities. Surrey is growing by over 1000 residents per month and some estimates have it surpassing Vancouver in population within the next 20 years. |
