Over one hundred years ago Yaletown started out as a rail yard for Canadian Pacific Railway. The area housed many warehouses and factories before being converted mostly into land for Expo '86 in that same year. After the fair, a Hong Kong developer transformed the area into one of Vancouver most vibrant and affluent neighborhoods. Over 25,000 people call it home today with more being added all the time.
Most of what remains of the historic heart of Yaletown is settled within several square blocks bordering Drake, Homer, Pacific and Nelson streets. This area is the focal point for the entire area featuring many high end restaurants, boutiques and design stores. The Yaletown Brew Pub and the Blue Water Cafe are just a few of the well know venues. The area features a very wide mix of stores and shops from Cafe to Surgeon.
While parking may be scarce within Yaletown itself, this poses a problem mainly on weekend days and nights as most people live within a close walk of the area. During the day it is much of quaint than in the evening, which is when Yaletown really lights up with activity and fun.Yaletown ranks alongside both Gastown and the East End as being one of Vancouver's most historic neighborhoods.
Starting in 2008, the City of Vancouver will be banning all dumpster's from city property. In Yaletown this will mean the removal of all bins which many believe will greatly improve the visual feel of the district. Instead of dumpster's, business's will be handed colour coded plastic bags to fill and in turn these will be collected up to three times daily to ensure proper garbage and recycling services are maintained to the area.
